Robert Jack Baker, 88, of Bryson City died suddenly Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at his home. A native of Alabama, he has been a resident of Western NC for the past 41 years. He was a graduate of Western Carolina University. He was a US Navy Veteran with 20 years of service having served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He also worked as a ship’s captain with Sedco Oil Company. He towed the world’s largest oil platform from Japan to the North Sea. He retired from Brawley Marine out of New Orleans, LA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Branton Baker; and brother, Bill Baker.
He is survived by two children, Catherine Baker of Cullowhee, Robert Alan Baker of Athens, TX; one grandson, Wesley Scott Baker of Durango, CO; two step children, Norma McKinney and husband Jerry of Bryson City, Charles Branton and wife DeLight of Durham; step grandchildren, Jill Parker and husband Brian of Bryson City, Holli McKinney of Charlotte, Melanie McCormick of Raleigh; four step great grandchildren; two sisters, Vashti Hopkins of Lake Hartwell, GA, and Patricia Bounds of ElCajon, CA.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Swain Memorial Park. Rev. Wayne “Wayner” Dickert will officiate.
Crisp Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
