Robert Jack Baker, 88, of Bryson City died suddenly Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at his home. A native of Alabama, he has been a resident of Western NC for the past 41 years. He was a graduate of Western Carolina University. He was a US Navy Veteran with 20 years of service having served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He also worked as a shipâ€™s captain with Sedco Oil Company. He towed the worldâ€™s largest oil platform from Japan to the North Sea. He retired from Brawley Marine out of New Orleans, LA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Branton Baker; and brother, Bill Baker.
He is survived by two children, Catherine Baker of Cullowhee, Robert Alan Baker of Athens, TX; one grandson, Wesley Scott Baker of Durango, CO; two step children, Norma McKinney and husband Jerry of Bryson City, Charles Branton and wife DeLight of Durham; step grandchildren, Jill Parker and husband Brian of Bryson City, Holli McKinney of Charlotte, Melanie McCormick of Raleigh; four step great grandchildren; two sisters, Vashti Hopkins of Lake Hartwell, GA, and Patricia Bounds of ElCajon, CA.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Swain Memorial Park. Rev. Wayne â€śWaynerâ€ť Dickert will officiate.
