Virgie Ola Brooks Shook, 97, passed away Friday, September 7, 2012.  She was born June 26, 1915, in the Chambers Creek Community of Swain County, to Jess and Sarah Melvina Chambers Brooks.  Mrs. Shook had lived most of her life in Bryson City, NC.  She was preceded in death by her husband William Chastine Shook, two sons, Delano and Donald, and a granddaughter Terry Shook Childers; brothers Harley, Lloyd, Roy, Robert, Frank, and Leonard Brooks, sisters Ruby Anthony and Inez Brooks, and three sons-in-law, Harold Bacon, Ray Harmon, and “Pete” Pedersen.  She is survived by one brother Coolidge Brooks (Elizabeth) of Whittier, one son, James (Brenda) Shook, Whittier, and five daughters; Mercedith Bacon, Bryson City, Midge Davis (Perry), Winnabow, NC, Margie Fausel (Ted), Griffin, GA, Dyanne Pedersen, Danielsville, GA, and Linda Harmon, Danielsville, GA.  Nanny Shook is also mourned by 16 much loved grandchildren:  Rhonda S. Johnson, Beverly Brooks, Ramie Weaver, Bob Leatherwood (Teresa), Nell Leatherwood, Maria Davis Jones (Philip), Perry Davis, Jr.(Beth), James Davis, Cindy Fausel, Terry Fausel (Susie), Dennis Pedersen, Jr., Leigh Anne Pedersen Pruitt (Greg), Critten Shook (Kim), Don Shook , Melissa Shuler, and Brian Shuler (Jolynn).  Nanny is also survived by numerous great and great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.  
Private graveside services were held Sunday, September 9, at Swain Memorial Park, with Brian Shuler officiating. Our precious Nanny enriched the lives of all who knew her. We will forever cherish the memories she helped us create.  
Anyone wishing to honor our Nanny’s memory may donate to the Luauda Cemetery Fund in Virgie Shook’s name.
