Alma Teresa Goldstein
Alma Teresa Goldstein, 86 of the Alarka community passed away peacefully at her home on April 12 surrounded by her family. A native of Boston, Mass and a longtime resident of Florida, Alma moved to the mountains of Bryson City in 1979. She was preceded in death by her son Francis Flynn.
She was one of the first female land developers in Swain County having developed Baines Mountain Country Estates in East Alarka. She won the Governor’s Award in 1981 for her design and building of an Earth Sheltered Solar Home. She was a passionate gardener and gourmet cook. She was a painter, lover of nature and the arts. She was courageous and remarkable, nurturing and giving. She traveled the world when she was younger and later became an avid user of the Internet. Above all things, she was a mother.
She is survived by four children; Margaret Hutchison and husband Dennis of Bryson City, Charles Flynn of Wilmington, NC, Stephen Flynn of Bryson City, Janet Carter and husband Brian of Bryson City. Grandchildren, Shanen Flynn, Yvette Flynn, Dennis Hutchison Jr., Jonathan Hutchison and wife Lauren, Caitlyn Carter and Alexis Carter. Her great grandchildren, Kayla Flynn and Jackson Flynn. She had countless special friendships as she touched so many throughout her life.
A celebration of her life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2012 in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant a tree in honor of mothers.
